The Hong-Kong born star raised in Britain will play a struggling actress aspiring to become big in Bollywood.
'Item girls' are actresses who perform the sexier dance routines in Bollywood movies, which are often completely unrelated to the rest of the film.
Producer Shirish Kunder has denied that Kaif was cast because of her British background. He told: "There isn’t any Southall connection to Katrina's character in the film.
"Instead she came in primarily due to her overall appearance which just fitted in perfectly with the requirement of the character. We were looking for somebody like her and ultimately settled for her only."
Kunder also praised director Farah Khan for her distinctive style: "Her films are meant to be complete masala entertainers that cater to all segments of audiences and Tees Maar Khan does exactly that."
