Saeed Jaffrey was born on 8th January 1929 in Malerkotla, Punjab. He went to St. George\'s College and Aligarh Muslim University and started his career by setting up his theatre company called Unity Theatre, at New Delhi. His early theatrical work included roles in productions of Tennessee Williams, Christopher Fry
, WildeOscar and Shakespeare. He did his studies at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London and went to the United States on a Fulbright scholarship, where he took a second post-graduate degree in drama from The Catholic University of America. He has also served as the Radio Director from 1951-1956 for All India Radio. He has graced the screen with his memorable performances in milestone films such as
Gandhi in 1982 and
My Beautiful Laundrette in 1985 which was a British Production. Back home, he starred opposite stalwarts such as
Sanjeev Kumar and
Shabana Azmi in maestro
Satyajit Ray’s Shatranj Ke Khilari. Jaffrey has also had a long and successful innings in Theater. He is credited with being one of the few talented actors of Indian decent to have made a mark in International productions outside home turf. He is married to actress and cookery expert
Madhur Jaffrey, the versatile. He has written his autobiography titled Saeed – An Actor’s Journey. He had three children from Madhur Jaffrey: Zia, Meera and actress Sakina Jaffrey, who appeared with her father in the film
Masala in 1991. He again got married to Jennifer. Saeed Jaffrey has the worked with frontline stars such as Sean Connery, Michael Caine and Pierce Brosnan. One of his most important roles was in Stephen Frears\'s My Beautiful Launderette 1985, where he played Nasser, the owner of the beautiful launderette. In 1988, he was seen in The Deceivers alongside Brosnan; in the British production In Between (2001); and was last seen in Day Of The Sirens in 2002.
